Why We Started TreeTipi – A Home for Your Family Tree

There is usually a moment when family history suddenly feels fragile.

You find an old photograph and recognise one person, but not the others.

Someone says, “Your grandfather used to talk about that place,” but nobody remembers exactly where it was.

A relative tells a story you have never heard before, and you realise they may be the only person left who knows it.

That is often how family history disappears.

Not all at once.

Piece by piece.

A name forgotten here. A photograph without a label there. A story that everyone assumed somebody else would remember.

And once those little pieces are gone, they can be surprisingly hard to get back.

That is why we started TreeTipi.

No one person knows the whole family story

One of the things we love about families is that everybody seems to carry a different part of the history.

One person remembers the dates.

Another has the photographs.

Someone else knows where the family came from.

A grandparent remembers the stories.

A cousin remembers the nickname everyone used.

An aunt knows why somebody moved to another country.

None of those pieces feels complete on its own.

But together, they begin to tell the story of a family.

We wanted TreeTipi to make that easy. A simple place where families can build their family tree together, without needing to understand complicated genealogy software or spend hours learning how everything works.

A place where a child can add a photo, a parent can fill in a missing detail, and a grandparent can share something nobody else in the family knew.

Because family history should not feel like admin.

It should feel like discovering where you come from.

Why the name TreeTipi?

The name came from two ideas that felt right together.

The tree is the family.

Its roots, branches, generations and all the connections between them.

The tipi is the gathering place.

A tipi is a traditional dwelling used by Indigenous peoples of the Great Plains of North America. It was a home and a shared space where family life happened, where people came together and stories were passed from one generation to the next.

That image stayed with us.

Because a family tree should not just be something you look at.

It should be something you gather around.

A place where names become people again.

Where old photographs find their stories.

Where different generations can add what they know.

And where a family can build something together that none of them could build alone.

That is what TreeTipi means to us.

A home for your family tree.

More than names and dates

A family tree can tell you that someone was born in 1932 and died in 2018.

But that is rarely what you remember about them.

You remember the way they laughed.

The food they always made.

The house everyone gathered at.

The expression they used all the time.

The stories they told.

The photograph everyone in the family has seen a hundred times.

Those are the things that turn a family tree into a family story.

And they are often the things most at risk of disappearing.

We want TreeTipi to make room for both.

The facts that show how people are connected.

And the memories that explain who those people really were.

Built for families, not genealogists

You should not need to be an expert to understand your own family.

That idea shapes almost everything we build.

If something needs a long explanation, we try to make it simpler.

If a feature creates more work than value, it probably does not belong.

If adding a person feels like filling out paperwork, we have made it too complicated.

TreeTipi should feel natural enough that someone can open it for the first time and know what to do.

Add a person.

Add what you know.

Invite someone who knows a little more.

There will always be another photograph.

And that is part of what makes family history special.

That is what we hope TreeTipi becomes.

A place where old photographs find their names again.

Where stories are written down before they disappear.

Where younger generations can discover people they never had the chance to meet.

Where relatives living on opposite sides of the world can add to the same family story.

And where the things a family remembers do not have to disappear when the people who remember them are gone.

You do not need to know everything before you begin.

You only need one person.

Then another.

Until, little by little, a family story begins to appear.
